Where do we start?

Where do we start?

I know that I am not even sure what I am feeling at times. The feeling of exhaustion, fear, hopelessness, depression, and anxiety come in waves. Sometimes I just feel numb. I have a feeling I am not alone.

The task of saving our country and our democracy, supporting and protecting marginalized communities, defeating autocracy, and so many other tasks seem so overwhelming, it makes it hard to figure out where to start.

I have started by surrounding myself with people who are struggling with the same issues and want to make a plan to fight back.

The Center for Nonviolence is an organization I have been associated with for many years. The teaching of Ghandi provide me with solace and peace in these times, as well.

Our wellbeing is of utmost importance at this time. We MUST take care of our emotional and mental health. You may want to exercise, practice yoga, find a counselor, find a support group, etc. We all deal with things in different ways and there is no one, right way to get through this.

There are many people who have been driven from religion because of the far right using it as a tool to hurt and discriminate against groups of people. There are people who have never sought help for emotional or mental health in the past but are feeling they need to do so now. That does not necessarily mean you have to find a counselor, although that may be very helpful. Some people don’t have the resources to afford paying a therapist or counselor. That doesn’t mean there is nothing you can do or nowhere to turn for help.

One of the things I would suggest first is finding your “tribe”, your group to belong. It may be online for those in very red, rural areas. However you connect is up to you. Just be sure to connect!

Indivisible is a way I have found to make a difference. All that needs to be done is overwhelming at times, this is why being part of this organization is so gratifying. One person can not do it all, but as a group we can. indivisible provides us a way to make a difference and “Do something”, as Michelle Obama instructed.

Check out Indivisible.org and see what groups may be in your area. If there are no groups in your area, contact someone about starting a group or working with a group in your state.

Indivisible New Braunfels is more than happy to work with anyone in Texas, whether you live here in New Braunfels or not. Just reach out to us and help us make a difference.

We can all get started together.

Indivisible New Braunfels Co-Leader
